Away in Philly for a couple of days

Eveo sent me out to Philly for the week to get trained on a new system. It’s been interesting driving around here, especially since it snowed today (only a couple of inches though). Tomorrow (or is it today now?) I finish up the training and drive directly to the airport and back home….bound to be a long day.

Doing some updates

Recently I’ve been finding out about some of the really cool web 2.0 apps that are floating around. I’ve also been looking for some motivation to start doing my own stuff again. With the baby, buying a condo, and what seems like constantly switching jobs I’ve really lost a lot of any motivation to pursue anything in my spare time that isn’t directly involving the family.

So I’ve been listening to some geeky tech podcasts while I’ve been working that have introduced me to some cool new apps, some of which you can see on the right side of this page. Another is the calendar link above. Seeing these awesome projects is pushing my motivate button a little, and I think that I’ll be posting things here more often. Maybe I’ll even start a project of my own….

Just finished “Holidays on Ice”

For my birthday last year, my friend Willo gave me a copy of this book by David Sedaris (of NPR fame), and as christmas rolled around I started reading a few pages every night before bed. I had almost finished it around the new year, but then family came into town and I went on vacation without it. So last night I finally read the final short story. Its a wonderfully funny book, and you should not spend your next holiday season without it. Its an awesome collection of short holday stories you’ll want to share. Thanks Willo!

View from my new digs

Below is the view I have at my new job at Orange. I like working in the Mission a lot…so many great shops around, and so much different from working in the middle of nowhere…

View from Orange

Here is my old job at Antenna:

I’m not sure which I like better…

So I’ve a little been quiet recently…

Because a lot has been happening in the last few months. No really, a lot…

so here is a little catch up.

*started an insanly busy period at Antenna (working on 3 major projects at the same time along with a bunch of small ones…)

*Un-archived a few thousand audio files from the past 10 years to upgrade the Getty’s audio guide

*programmed and launched a multimedia tour for the Museum of Science Boston, they have an exhibit relating to Star Wars I made the tour for.

*Bought a Condo

*Went on a 2 week vacation to the South of France to have Ava baptised (while finishing escrow, no really! We closed on the condo while in France…crazy eh?)

*Came back from vacation and flew directly back to Boston to do some on-site testing for their exhibit.

*worked my ass off for Antenna since things were still way too busy…

*updated and wrote several lectures for the Advanced Flash class I’m teaching at the College of San Mateo (so yes I’m working 2 jobs)

*Put in hardwood floor kits into the Living room and 2 bedrooms in the Condo (in one weekend)

*installed wall to wall, wall mounded shelves in the living room, TWICE! They had issues the first time around…

*Moved into the new place

*Ava had her first birthday (and I had my 32nd at the same time)

*Interviewed and got a new Job in the Mission (in S.F.) with a company called Orange Design

well that about sums up most everything. I started at Orange this week

Wholy crap, I think I won an iPod

Macromedia Pocket PC Contest

I entered this contest at the last minute a couple of weeks back, with some Pocket PC applications I designed a year back to try and help me get a job. I just figured I should try and enter.

I got an e-mail this morning and was asked to verify my contact info from someone at Macromedia. I figured I won a t-shirt or some other swag. But from reading the article (I missed winning the 42 inch plasma tv, darn…), I guess I won an iPod.

HeHeHeHeHe….yeah!!!!

Sweet!
—————————————————————Quick Update. I got a call from them this morning on the way to work and I have won a 30GB iPod Photo, I should be seeing it on my doorstep next week!!!

Spent the night in the Operating Room

Well its not what you think, this has to do with my last post on spending the night on Alcatraz. We pretty much had the run of the place, at least the cell block. Apparently it was bird nesting season, and parts of the island were closed off. We had a choice of sleeping in “D” block in a cell, or in the hospital wing. It was kind of interesting how it all worked out, all the girls decided to spend the night doubled up in cells in “D” block, and the guys spend the night in the hospital. One of the executives where I work spend the night in solitary in the hospital, one of the IT guy’s (Chris) spend the night by himself in the Pharmacy, and me and another IT guy (Alex) bunked in the operating room. We had discussed spending the night in the hydro-therapy room, but that was just a little too edgy for me at the time.

I actually got a good nights sleep, aside from staying up till 1 AM running around the place. I think we got a better nights sleep than the girls because the noise the birds were making just echoed through the cell blocks, and it was much more muted in the hospital.

Apparently like one in a billion people can say they spent the night on Alcatraz, someday I’ll have to go back and take the tour. Having grown up here, I’ve never visited the place before…

Spending the night on Alcatraz

One of the “perks” of my job this month is I get to go with the tech department to spend the night on Alcatraz. As a San Francisco Native, I’ve never actually been to this little island in San Francisco Bay. My company produced and maintains the Audio Tour there, and once a year we go to do some maintenance there. We leave on the last boat of the day, do some work, have a little BBQ, maybe get a private tour, and sleep someplace really spooky like a cell or the hospital or something…. I’ll update this later after I get back on Thursday morning

the morning mistake

Middle of the week, on my hour long commute to work. Need to get gas, stop on 19th and Judah to filler~up…

In a hurry, leave the lights on—hop on out of the car…close the door…and pump away…

Put the hose back to grab the ticket and back into the truck to start the rest of the day only to find denial.

Door locked, keys inside, day crumbeling to the ground in pieces…what to do…what to do…

Go talk to the man in behind the window, who pitches in by lending a hand…but nothing to do…all the windows closed…all doors prohibited…

The MAN sends me across the intersection to the other service station—the dude cant leave the place but offers me the skinny tool to do the job…however the tool is new to me, but I say sure…

Cross back to the ride denied,,,slip the skinny in,,,and first shot~~dumb luck~~caught the latch and found my way in.

quickly returned the took to the dude…and was on my way…

if you ever need gas on 19th…the orange ball is the place to be…
